Michael Honeywell Florida Squatters

Where the lower end of the Florida Ridge Section meets the Everglades,
None of the squatters seem to know to whom the land belongs,
And are never to pay rent.

Part of the area is course white sand,
Other parts are hammock land,
Other parts are swamps and bayheads around small lakes and streams.

Almost every family owns a shotgun
kept loaded hung upon the wall.

Most of the men and some of the women are excellent marksmen,
Hunting is an event in which the older boys also take part.
Boys "go a-hunting with Pa." and "rattlesnakin",
Hunting is a necessity rather then a sport, and is usually a family affair

Most of their dewllings are flimsy one-room shanties,
Heavy wooden shutters taking the place of window glass
The squatters seldom have wells
Where the lower end of the Florida Ridge Section meets the Everglades.
